Development Plan

Creating a legacy for future generations with our exciting plans.

Since first opening in 1983, our volunteers have been continuously developing the railway for future generations to enjoy.

Most notably, in 2010 the line to Blaenavon High Level reopened after twenty-seven years of hard work both on the ground and behind the scenes. In 2011 they then went on to construct and open a short branch line to the Big Pit National Coal Museum, before extending our mainline past Blaenavon High Level to Coed Avon in 2015.

Our volunteers have also undertaken numerous other projects that have significantly improved the visitor experience. From the provision of buildings at all our stations to the construction of sheds to restore and protect our heritage rolling stock, all have helped make the railway into the attraction that thousands enjoy every year.

The railway currently has exciting plans to grow and develop in the future. From further extensions to the improvement of visitor facilities, all will ensure that our railway will continue to succeed and prosper for generations to come!

In 2020, The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway Company Board of Directors approved a significant new Development Plan.

Written by Director Alex Hinshelwood, it outlines our railway’s current plans and ambitions for the coming years. You can download a copy below.
